What is Causal Coaching?

When people hear “Life Coach” they often think of a person who gives you advice or tells you what to do and then holds you accountable for taking action. There are some life coaches who operate that way and that’s fine, but that’s not my philosophy.

The type of coaching I do is called causal coaching. Causal coaching is all about helping you understand the reasons WHY you aren’t getting the results you want.

Imagine you really want to lose weight. You know that you need to stop eating so much junk food. You go to the grocery store and buy a bunch of healthy food and you feel motivated. You eat really well for a few days or weeks, but then you fall back into your old habits again. You want to lose weight so desperately, but you think you just don’t have the willpower.

The problem is not your willpower. The problem is you are trying to change your ACTIONS without understanding the underlying belief systems that lead you to be overweight in the first place. It’s really difficult to make lasting changes when we are working against ourselves. You are trying to act in a way that goes against what you believe about yourself and food. Many times we aren’t even aware of those deeply ingrained beliefs. A causal coach can help you uncover those belief systems and really take a look at what those beliefs are creating for you.

Now imagine you have a child with ADHD. Oh wait! You do. You really want to be patient with him and not yell at him so often. You want to be a happy, fun Mom. You want to have more energy and not feel so exhausted and overwhelmed all the time. You know what you need to do. You are resolved to be more patient and kind with your kids. Just don’t yell. Easy right?

But then you had an especially tough day today. You got a call from the school again about your son’s behavior. When he got home from school you lost your temper and yelled at him. He yells back at you and it ends in tears and slammed doors. You feel awful. It didn’t take long before you fell back into old behaviors. Why? You so desperately want to not feel so angry all the time.

The problem is the same as in the weight loss example. You are trying to change your ACTIONS without understanding WHY you are behaving that way. I can help you uncover what’s going on here so you can begin to change it.

I’ll give you a hint though. It isn’t your child’s fault. It isn’t your fault either. Your lower brain is performing exactly how it’s supposed to. There’s nothing wrong with you.

Book a mini session with me and we’ll figure out together what beliefs are holding you back from being exactly the Mom you want to be.
